Bangkok Round Up 1: Temple Selfies

Friday, 7 August 2015

As I mentioned many times in my previous posts, Don and I went to Bangkok for a short holiday! It was our first time traveling together. To be completely honest, i was really anxious to travel with Don. He is laid back, I am not. I like to have a travel itinerary, he likes to with the flow. Don and I don't fight, but we bicker like siblings. I was worried that something might go wrong during our travels and one (me) of us would get upset.

To my delight, Don is such an easy guy to travel with. In fact, I think he is one of the easiest and most fun person to travel with. I've travelled with many different characters. Don is  #1 on my list to travel with. It's not because he is my boyfriend, but he is really a fun guy to travel with. Whatever i had planned to do in Bangkok, he was okay and up for it. He let me make all the decisions and he just followed me. He didn't mind getting ripped off by the locals, while i tried to bargain to the lowest we could go. The only time Don decided on something was when he wanted to have Pad Thai for lunch, so off we went to get him Pad Thai.

One of the things we did in Bangkok was visiting the majestic Grand Palace. This beautiful palace was the official residence of the Kings of Thailand since 1782. The Grand Palace is located along the Choa Praya River and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Thailand. We dedicated a day to do sight seeing and tourist stuff. Thinking that going to the Grand Palace on a Thursday would be a smart idea. Work day. Less crowd. More time to look at the temples. NO. We were wrong! The Grand Palace was filled with tourists waving their umbrellas around, talking loudly, taking selfies and doing every tourist stereotype. Trying to get a proper photo of you and the temples behind you was not possible with people walking in front of the camera or photobombing you.

To document our experience of the Grand Palace without any tourist at the back or photobombing us. We took selfies! and lots selfies!

Hi guys!

Don has the warmest smile!
Tourist behind us.

Outside the Grand Palace compound
Despite all having to deal with the heat and bus loads of tourists at the Grand Palace. Both Don and I had a wonderful time walking around the palace compound and admiring the architecture. Absorbing the culture and history. While we were walking out, i pointed out to Don that it's amazing to see how the Thais preserved this historic landmark and at the same time build a modern Thailand around it. You could see the stark contrast of historic temples and modern skyscrapers next to it.

Have you been to Bangkok? How do you deal with pesky tourists?
