8 Tips On How To Save Money

Thursday, 26 November 2015

Since I started working last year, I have been trying to build a healthy savings account. Having to switch on my "adult" mode - I didn't know there are so many things a 20 something adults needs to save money for - a car, a house, wedding and the occasional holidays. Now, with the horrible financial turmoil Malaysia is going through now, everything is so expensive! Things that were affordable are double in price. Suddenly, I find myself working out ways to save money while trying to afford a trip to see Don, hang out with my girlfriends and enjoy life.

Here are some ways I save money:

  1. Have a separate account. One for savings and one for money. Once I put in my savings into my account. I try not to touch it unless for emergencies.
  2. Bring my own water bottle. Especially when I go for workouts. A big bottle of water can cost up to RM3. I try to hit the gym/yoga 3 times a week, that's almost RM10 just for water.

  3. Plan out my entertainment allowances. I allow myself a night out with the girls once a month, movies and hangout sessions. I try to allocate a certain amount for entertainment and strictly stick to it.

  4. Organize game night or movie night. One of my girlfriends loves organising game nights and screening night at her house. Every other week, we will have a group night in together.

  5. Selling my old clothes/makeups. Not only saving but earning!

  6. Don't order fancy drinks when eating out. I am trying to cut down on my sugar intake, so when I am out having meals with my friends or family. I don't order any drinks and just have ice water with lemon. This can help you save a lot!

  7. Bring snacks from home. I am now making a habit of bringing chopped fruits, nuts, seaweed crackers or rice biscuits to work for snacks I save money and get to be healthy.

  8. Stop all monthly subscription you don't use. I bought Spotify premium for RM9.99/monthly to listen to music in my car, but I stopped listening to music in the car because I am usually on the phone with Don (Don't worry! We used our handsfree) on the way back from work. I have been listening to FREE podcasts on the podcast app!

  9. Unsubscribe to all fashion (E.g: Zalora, Zara, Asos, Doublewoot, Net-A-Porter, Shopbob) newsletter. Once you see things you like, you're most likely to purchase. When you don't see the "latest clothes" out or "Discounts" "Sale", you wouldn't buy. Out of sight, out of mind.
