I have been in a rut for the past few weeks. I've been so uninspired and demotivated to do anything. My room and laundry can be proof that I have not been in the mood to do anything! Laundry waiting to be folded. My makeup table is full of makeup that needs to be put away. My desk. Let's not go there. Thank god, I am sane enough to bring down my dirty laundry for washing. This rut that I have been in is also making me have a writer's block. I usually have my blog post entries written and scheduled a week in advance. By doing this, it gives me time to do research, edit photos and etc for the following week's posts. Ever since I got home from my visit to see Don. I was severely suffering from post-holiday blues. It was so hard to leave to Perth and come back to gloomy, hazy KL. I needed to do something about this rut and slowly picked myself up.
Here's are 5 simple steps to get out from a rut
01 Wake up earlier
I have to thank Don for this. Ever since he started his new job. He calls me every morning between
8-830am to have a morning chat. I am not good with mornings. I was still in my routine of waking up at 9-930am daily until last week. Waking up to Don's morning calls has made it easier to wake up and get out of bed. I can get a lot of things done before noon and have noon to do other things.
02 Chill Time
Because I am up earlier than I am usually, I get tired a lot faster. My body is still adjusting to this routine. By 1 pm, I am either tired, hungry or sleepy. Sometimes all three and that's when I am in trouble. I used to work through all three emotion. Leave work at 5 pm. Take a nap until dinner and then get screwed because I will awake the whole night. Now, if I am hungry, I will get a snack. If I am tired or sleepy. I will take 10 minutes rest time. Make me a cup of tea or call Don.
03 To-do List
I don't know if you can guess it by now. I am a big fan of to-do lists. All my monthly goals are written in a way for me to tick off. I have a notebook dedicated to my "To-do" of the day. There's something about writing your To-Do on paper and ticking them off as you go along. It's so satisfying! Ticking off my To-do lists has definitely helped me get back on track because I am the sort who NEEDSTOGETALLOFTHISDONETODAY. I find so much joy when I see everything on my To-Do list ticked off.
04 Treat yourself
I see nothing wrong with treating yourself to something daily. It can be a delicious meal at your favourite restaurant (this is my favourite treat), a dress or shoes you have been eyeing for or a movie after a long day. Indulge in these little things to make yourself feel better and inspired.
05 Find inspirations
Whenever I get stuck in a rut, my mind automatically stops creating. I would force myself to brainstorm for ideas (for work, blog, side projects and life) and come out with crap. When it comes to this point, I will stop whatever I am doing (creating wise) and just chill. I would drop everything and go chill at a cafe with a magazine, do blog surfing or scroll through Instagram for inspirations. Once I am inspired by the things I read and saw, I am able to create.
Are you feeling better now? If you have any other tips on how to get out from a rut, let me know!
