5 Racist Things I Have Said To My White boyfriend

Monday, 28 September 2015

I come from Malaysia where it's a melting pot of culture, race, and traditions. A culture integrated of Malays, Chinese, and Indians. Culture clashes often happen, but rarely. When it comes to racism, it's the sort of thing where it's okay for a mother to call her kid "naughty" when they have done something mischievous but NOT okay when other mothers call her kid "naughty". Same for me, it's totally fine for my (Chinese or Indian) friends to call me a stereotype of my race BUT totally not cool if someone else does it. I often forget that Don and I are from two different cultures because we have very similar beliefs, personal goals that have nothing to do with culture. Once in a while, my Malaysian honesty comes out... in the form of foot in the mouth way. Here are five racist things I said to my Australian boyfriend.

01 "I wouldn't date a white guy"
Before we got together, we were hanging out with our friends after class in university, I accidentally slipped out that I wouldn't date a white guy. I justified by saying it was easier dating someone from Malaysia, but really it was a preference. I didn't find white guys or in a more polite term western guys attractive. I like tall, dark and handsome men. My friends and family were pretty shocked when I brought him home.

02 "You're likely to cheat because you're white"
Totally uncalled for and I wanted to put my foot in my mouth the moment I said it. We're talking about what would be the dealbreaker for us. We both agreed that cheating will be it. Don then thought out loud, "Gosh, I don't know what I will do if you cheated" Then I replied with the above. I stereotyped my forever buddy with all the western movies I watched. I am a horrible person.

03 "Do you like me because I am exotic?"
Again, stereotyping my boyfriend to yellow fever. I could have asked him if he liked me because I was funny, smart or... because I inspire him to be better. Instead, I asked him if he liked me because I was exotic?

04 "I am going to bring color to your family"
My mom and dad are products of bi-racial heritage. My mom is half-Chinese and my dad is half-Chinese and Mamak (Indian-Malay) which basically makes me a melting pot of all the above. Don told me that he is 6th generation Australian. I told him, we are going to be a colorful family.

05 "You're so white"
Once I was cold, I went to Don for a cuddle. He rubbed his warm hands on my arms and shoulders and commented on how soft my skin is. I looked at his hands on my arms and pointed out the contrast of our skin tone. Now, Don has made it his life's mission to not let me forget that I called him "white".

For those in an interracial relationship, have guys said anything close to what I said? Or, have a funny/mean/awkward story? Tell me!!
